The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a sweeping and powerful musical inspired by Victor Hugo’s classic novel, featuring a rich score and haunting storytelling that explores themes of love, acceptance, and humanity. Quasimodo is the kind-hearted bell-ringer of Notre Dame who has lived hidden away his entire life and dreams of friendship, acceptance, and experiencing the world beyond the cathedral. Dom Claude Frollo, the Archdeacon of Notre Dame and Quasimodo’s guardian, is strict, intelligent, and deeply religious, yet struggles with inner conflict that leads him toward fear and obsession. Esmeralda is a brave and compassionate Romani dancer who stands up for the oppressed, showing kindness to Quasimodo while challenging injustice wherever she encounters it. Captain Phoebus de Martin is the charming captain of the guard who learns to follow his conscience over authority, becoming a courageous ally to Esmeralda and a force for justice. Clopin Trouillefou, the lively leader of the Romani people and narrator, is playful and theatrical, guiding the audience through the story while reminding us of its deeper lessons. The Ensemble/Congregation represents the people of Paris — townsfolk, soldiers, festival crowds, and the cathedral choir — helping tell the story through powerful movement and music while serving as the voice of society throughout the musical.
